My Story
Hi, I’m Selma. I have worked, helping people heal from trauma, in private practice for over 5 years using a combination of Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. During this time, I also pursued a BSc degree in Psychology from the University of Derby, UK. I specialize in PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder) and Complex PTSD, anxiety, depression, narcissistic abuse, sexual abuse, dissociation, addictions, grief, and psychosomatic symptoms. I believe that doing my own healing work helps my clients’ healing journey and makes me a better therapist who can offer a compassionate and safe therapeutic relationship.
Overcoming my traumatic childhood and recovering from the challenges of being raised by narcissistic parents inspired me to pursue psychology and become a therapist. Growing up in the West with Pakistani parents has influenced both my role as a therapist and my personal growth. My family was religious and enforced certain rules on me which made things even tougher with parents who were already narcissistic. I have also lived in a so-called honors culture where shame is used as a tool to restrict women from experiencing autonomy as a human and as a woman.
I have used traditional talk therapy, EMDR, IFS, and Sensorimotor psychotherapy to heal from narcissistic abuse, nightmares, trauma bonds, depression, anxiety, and psychosomatic symptoms. Through my journey, I found IFS and Sensorimotor psychotherapy to be the most effective therapies, relieving and eliminating symptoms caused by a traumatic upbringing. It is my commitment to myself and my clients to continue my own healing with my IFS and Sensorimotor psychotherapist, along with supervision.
I love that IFS is a holistic approach to healing and integrates well with both somatic and embodied processes and clients’ spiritual beliefs. The mind-body connection also informs my practice since trauma leaves its imprint on our bodies.
This is why I decided to get trained in IFS and Sensorimotor psychotherapy. Seeing profound and lasting changes in my client’s lives is the cornerstone of my work and the reason I do what I do.
I offer sessions online. If you would like to try IFS and Sensorimotor psychotherapy with me and get a sense of working together, I invite you to contact me to arrange a 60-minute session free of charge. To schedule a session, click on Book a Session.
