How To Find Your Purpose

You might have been wondering for a very long time what you are supposed to be doing with your life, I know I have. At one point I seriously thought I would never find my purpose, I would never figure outwhat I’m supposed to be doing. After an injury to my right eye

I wasn’t able to do what I loved the most which was to play badminton, I thought that I wouldn’t ever be as passionate about anything as I was for badminton. It was my dream to become so great that I could compete in the Olympics one day.

But when life takes something away it also provides you with other opportunities. It forces you to grow and be more grateful of fundamental things most of us take for granted, in this case it was my ability to see perfectly with both eyes. I wasn’t this calm and collected about what happened back then though. I was bitter, angry, hurt, lost and confused to say the least. Life seemed unfair and it had taken away from me what was my greatest source of joy, bliss, happiness and peace.

Things didn’t get any easier from there. There were quite many crises going on back home at the time and one of them was my parents getting divorced. I felt like my whole world came crashing down. They had been together for over forty years and the question that kept going on and on in my head was “how could this be happening?” Thinking about my life purpose during circumstances impossible to grasp at the time, was the last thing on my mind.

Many years later I did however realize what my purpose was. And even though it took me a long time to find, it was necessary because all the experiences I had were the very thing that was leading me towards my purpose. It was as if the universe was unfolding my purpose to me through all the hardship and struggle I had to go through. Those ten years were beautiful but at the same time also the most difficult and challenging years of my life. I didn’t see it that way during my painful “life trial” but I see it now. The pain and suffering I went through was one day going to become a lesson for someone else. Also, it made me the person I am today which is someone I’m absolutely proud of.

My father recently told me that I need to get a PHD in my life. Why? He didn’t say, but that was his idea of what I should do with my life. I still get advice about how to live my life, because to some people, no matter what you do or who you are, it’s not enough according to them. But all of that doesn’t matter; the only thing that matters is what you think of yourself.

You see, I don’t have a degree, I don’t have any specific qualities or certificates that can give me a high paying job BUT, what I do have is experience. What I do have is wisdom, gained from a lifetime of more pain, suffering and hurt than most kids should have to go through. What I do have is mindfulness, peace and happiness in my life, something most people I know don’t have in their lives. Despite having the money, jobs, degrees, material possessions and what not, they are still not happy.

That’s not the definition of success to me.

My definition of success is that you are happy with who you are, what you do, and where you are heading. I love my life, myself (and I say that with all humility) and I am at peace with my mind. I think I’ve achieved success because to me being truly happy and peaceful within you is all that really matters.

I’ve made so many mistakes in the past but also learned from them. And now my purpose is to help as many people as possible. I intend to do that through sharing my own story and by doing so I’m hoping to motivate, inspire and ultimately change lives.

What’s your purpose? What’s your life story? What path are you on that’s leading you to your purpose? Maybe your purpose is already right in front of your eyes.

Think about this:

  1. What do you love? What makes you truly happy? What is that something that you are naturally good at? When you do it, time flies by, you are at ease and life seems effortless.
  2. What excuse are you coming up with that’s stopping you from pursuing what you truly want?
  3. What must you do to live your purpose or make your dream a reality?
  4. How can your talents, your skills help other people?

“The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose” – Robin Sharma

Your purpose will be unique to you. Living a life of purpose will always mean different things to different people. Anything that makes you feel happy and also helps someone else to feel good is a purpose worth having and fighting for. It could be anything from being a doctor to being a great parent or just spreading joy to people’s lives with your presence. It doesn’t matter what it is, there is no dream/purpose too “big” or “small”. If it makes you happy and it serves a good cause, you simply must go for it or keep doing what you do if you already know what your purpose is.

Maybe some of you will say; “Ya, all of that sounds great but I have a fulltime job, a family to support and barely any time left to think about my purpose.”

All I can say to that is that this is your life. No matter what circumstance you are in, as long as you are able to dream of a life filled with meaning, as long as you strive for something more and know you can do more and be more, then there is a way to get there. Everything else is an excuse, yes I said that and I don’t say it to make you feel guilty or bad.

We all (including myself) complain about how we aren’t happy with certain aspects of our lives, when we all know it is the way it is because we aren’t willing to do something about it.

We want to live a meaningful existence without sacrificing or changing anything. Well, that’s not how it works unfortunately. To gain something you must also give something up, that “something” should be things that don’t serve you at all. For example watching TV, engage in meaningless conversations, checking social media and sometimes even waking up a little earlier could help us achieve the kind of life we dream of.

When I worked full time I felt like I didn’t get enough time for myself. So I decided to wake up earlier, eat foods that are health and easy to digest to get more energy. Next things I knew it was a normal daily routine for me to wake up at five in the morning, take a rejuvenating walk in nature, exercise, eat a healthy breakfast, read/learn something of value and then get off to work. You see, there is ALWAYS a way to get more time to do what we love but we must be willing to give something up in return for what we want.

If you read about all the great leaders of today and the past, one thing they have in common is that they sacrificed a lot to achieve greatness in life. So you got to ask yourself this crucial question:

Are you willing to give something up to live your purpose? (Could be, giving up extravagant living and gain happiness and peace in return).

And also, are you willing to do the necessary work that might be required to achieve your dream?

To live a life of purpose you got to be brave and that means saying yes to the risks involved, saying yes to potential loss and putting your fear on the shelf.

Let me tell you that once you do that, it doesn’t matter whether you “fail” or “succeed”. The time you say yes to your dream and a purposeful living, you are saying yes to life and that means living a life of purpose. Because what most people don’t understand is that, success lays in the journey of our life not the outcome.
